Fairs leads with 14 kills
Erin Fairs' 14 kills were not enough as the University of Louisville volleyball team fell 3-1 to North Carolina to end the Cardinals' ten match unbeaten streak in the ACC Friday night in Chapel Hill.
Â
The Cardinals were plagued with unforced errors, hitting .142, committing 11 service errors, three blocking errors and two ball handling errors. UNC moved to 12-8 and 9-2 in the ACC with the 18-25, 25-11, 25-22, 25-22 win. UofL, now 16-5, got double digit kills from Aniah Philo, who had 10 and Janelle Jenkins, who had 13 with 19 digs and three blocks. Molly Sauer had 17 digs and Katie George had a double-double with a match-high 45 assists and 12 digs. UNC was led by Leigh Andrew's 12 kills and 14 digs.
Â
"Hats off to UNC. They played great defense and really took us out of our rhythm with their block," said UofL head coach Anne Kordes. "We had a really bad second set and couldn't bounce back. However, I liked our fight. I am extremely proud of libero Molly Sauer. Not only did she pass and serve well, she played incredible defense.
Â
Â
The Cardinals used a 5-1 run midway through the first set to take a 16-12 lead and never trailed again for the 25-18 win. UofL hit .326 to UNC's .190. The Cards were powered by Erin Fairs' six kills.
Â
Louisville trailed by just two at 8-6 in the second set and then traded points with the Tarheels. UNC's Sheila Boyle went back and served for 11 straight points to go up 22-8. Erin Fairs had a kill to finally staunch the point bleed. UofL managed to get out of single digits but fall 25-11 for the lowest set point total of the year.
Â
The third set was a back-and-forth contest but the Cards never led. UNC had set point at 24-18 and the Cards managed to score four straight before going down 25-22.
Â
UofL took the lead at 3-2 in the fourth set, their first lead since the first serve of the second set and turning out to be the only lead of the final set.  UNC went on a 5-0 run to go up 7-3. The Cardinals answered in small spurts of scoring and managed to tie at 21.
Â
The Cardinals travel to North Carolina State to take on the Wolfpack Sunday at 2 p.m. in Raleigh.Â
