No. 23 Volleyball Sweeps NC State
November 01, 2015 | Women's Volleyball
Cards are 11-1 in ACC
Junior right side hitter Janelle Jenkins had 14 kills and two blocks to lead the No. 23-ranked University of Louisville volleyball team to a 25-23, 25-18, 25-18 sweep of ACC foe NC State Sunday afternoon in Raleigh.
Â
"That was a great way to bounce back today," said UofL head coach Anne Kordes. "Janelle Jenkins paced us offensively and libero Molly Sauer was again dominant defensively. I thought Katie George did a great job at setter to get our middles involved, which opens up the pin hitters. NC State played really hard, so it was an intense match from the start. We are coming away from this match with a lot of confidence."
Â
The Cardinals move to 11-1 in the ACC and improve to 17-5 overall. UofL hit .393 with nine blocks and three aces. NC State hit .181 with four blocks and 4 aces. UofL's Tess Clark had nine kills and six blocks with Erin Fairs adding eight kills and two blocks. Setter Katie George had five kills of her own and had a match-high 37 assists.
Â
In the first set, neither team could build more than a three point lead early on. Louisville ran off five straight to get some breathing room at 20-16 but the Pack tied at 22. A hitting error by UofL's Aniah Philo put NC State up one at 23-22 and then the Wolfpack committed three straight errors to give UofL the 25-23 win.
Â
In the second set, UofL established an early lead at 12-6 then widened the gap to 20-10 powered by four kills by Janelle Jenkins during the stretch. NC State made a push late, getting to 24-18 and staving off set point twice before falling 25-18 on another kill by Jenkins. Â
Â
In the third set, the Cards trailed early but tied at ten on a hitting error by NC State's Kaitlyn Kearney. Louisville never trailed again, spreading the score to 20-10 on a kill by Maggie DeJong. Katie George got the Cards to set and match point at 24-16 but the Pack managed to score twice more before falling on a kill by Tess Clark for the 25-18 win.
Â
The Cards return home next weekend with a matchup against Pitt on Friday at 7 p.m. and Virginia Tech on Sunday at 2 p.m., both at the KFC Yum! Center.Â
