No. 15 Field Hockey Blanks Dartmouth 2-0
September 06, 2014 | Field Hockey
"This was a great win for us against a difficult and impressive opponent in Dartmouth," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "We continue to learn lessons every day that we perform. Dartmouth set the tone early that the 1v1 battles were going to be important. We did a nice job at creating some space for each other and then were able to combine with some nice patterns of play."
The teams played through nine scoreless minutes before the Cards broke through with a goal on their third penalty corner of the game. Sophomore Shannon Sloss connected on a pass from senior Alyssa Voelmle to put Louisville on the scoreboard.
Louisville took the 1-0 lead into the break after outshooting the Big Green 8-0. The teams had three penalty corners apiece.
The Cardinals turned up the offensive pressure in the second half, with a 16-0 advantage in shots and a 7-1 lead in penalty corners. Sloss's team-best fourth goal of the season provided an insurance goal with two minutes remaining in the game.
In the game, Louisville outshot Dartmouth 25-8 and held a 10-4 lead in penalty corners. Junior Sydney King had five saves in her first shutout of the season. Dartmouth's Ellen Meyer registered 15 stops in the game. Dartmouth drops to 0-2 on the season.
"Defensively we were okay and we managed to get it done in the end but we need to improve our individual defense across all lines and be more organized and disciplined at the back," said Sowry. "It was a gritty performance and now we must refocus and get ready for Northwestern."
UofL will face No. 14 Northwestern (3-1) Sunday at 12 p.m. (ET).
