
Men's Golf Wins Cardinal Intercollegiate

SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's golf team finished their third event of the 2014-15 season on Tuesday, taking first place at the Cardinal Intercollegiate to earn their first win of the season. With the Cardinals hosting and winning the tournament, the event took place Monday and Tuesday, and was held at the University of Louisville Golf Club in Simpsonville, Ky.
The Cardinals won the tournament after making up a nine stroke deficit in round three to finish with a team score of 870 and top the 16-team field. At just one shot back, Louisiana-Monroe finished second, shooting a 7-over par 871. Cincinnati (877), Austin Peay State (879), finished third and fourth respectively, while UT Martin shot 882 as a unit to round out the tournament's top five.
"I was really proud of the kids, they played with a lot of heart," head coach Mark Crabtree said of his team's first win of the season. "Down the stretch we played really well. We never gave up, we hung in there, we had a little good fortune at the end, and because of that we were one shot better."
"I couldn't be more proud of the heart and the effort that the kids gave. We weren't on top of our game this week, but it takes a total team effort and that's what these guys did."
Sophomore Robert Geibel was the highest Cardinal finisher, posting a score of 215 to finish the event tied for third place. Geibel, who finished Monday tied for sixth, was solid and steady over the course of the tournament, carding rounds of 72-71-72. Senior Maximilian Walz also earned a top-10 finish, shooting rounds of 74-72-72 for a tied-for-tenth overall score of 218.
J.D. Lehman finished tied for 12 after rounds of 78-71-70=219 to finish as the Cards' third-best scorer. Trevor Sluman placed 26, firing rounds of 70-75-78=223. Gus Lundquist rounded things out for the Cardinals, placing tied for 44 with rounds of 76-77-75=228.
Competing as an individual, senior Antoine Le Saux finished tied for 22nd place. He followed rounds of 72 and 71 on Monday with a 72 on the event's final day, carding a three-round score of 222.
Louisiana-Monroe's Greg Smail and Eastern Kentucky's Patric Sundolf topped the leader board. Smail shot rounds of 72 and 70 in the first two rounds before ending the tournament with a 3-under 69 in round three for an overall of 211. Sundolf shot 68-72-71=211. Louisiana-Monroe also had Calum Hill place third with rounds of 71-71-73 for an overall event of 215.
Idle next week, the Cardinals will see their next action when the team travels to Noblesville, Ind. in two weeks to compete in the Ball State Invitational on Oct. 13 and 14.
