LYNCHBURG, Va. - The No. 11 University of Louisville field hockey team fell 2-1 at Liberty University Sunday afternoon. The loss snaps a four-game win streak for the Cardinals (8-2).
"Of course it's disappointing we didn't get the outcome we desired today, however we controlled the tempo for the majority of the game," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "Our passing patterns and possession rates were excellent which was a drastic improvement from our previous game. We let ourselves down with a couple of defensive lapses and the inability to finish up front. Liberty was able to capitalize on their opportunities and we didn't - and that ultimately was the difference in today's game."
Overall, the Cardinals outshot the Lady Flames 18-5 and held a 9-2 advantage in penalty corners, including a corner followed by a penalty stroke in the closing seconds of the game, but Liberty's defense held on for the win.
Liberty (6-4) quickly took a 1-0 lead when Ashlee Krulock connected on a pass from Cassidy Brenner at the 2:57 mark in the game.
Louisville responded less than four minutes later. On the Cards' third penalty corner of the game, senior Alyssa Voelmle registered her team-best seventh goal of the season with assists from fellow seniors Mallory Mason and Paige Monsen.
The Lady Flames regained the lead in the 20th minute when Hannah Goldsborough sent a pass from Sarah Gipe into the cage to bring the score to 2-1.
Liberty took the 2-1 lead into halftime after the Cards held first half advantages in both shots: 10-5 and corners: 6-1.
Louisville went on to outshoot Liberty 8-0 in the second half and drew three corners, including one as time expired on the clock. Voelmle got a shot off, but it was blocked in front of the goal and Cardinals were awarded a penalty stroke.
Mason stepped up to take the stroke and sent a shot to the right side of the cage, but Liberty goalkeeper Mallory Cuccio was there for her eighth save of the game to keep the score at 2-1.
UofL goalkeeper Sydney King (8-2) collected three saves in the game.
The Cardinals (8-2, 2-1 ACC) are back in action on Friday, Oct. 3 when they play host to No. 3 Duke (8-1, 1-1) in an ACC matchup. The game will be shown regionally and on ESPN3.
