LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The No. 11 University of Louisville field hockey team used goals from six different players as the Cardinals defeated Ohio State 6-3 Tuesday afternoon at Trager Stadium. With the win, Louisville (7-1) extends its home win streak to 14 games dating back to the 2012 season.
"It was an interesting game today," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "We kept reminding our team that if we didn't come out strong and focused today, Saturday's win over North Carolina would mean nothing to us if we couldn't back it up against another good opponent. There were some good things and some not so good things. We tried to keep the game very simple and play to our strengths and keep our identity."
The game featured a back-and-forth battle between the two teams with Louisville holding a 3-2 lead at halftime; but the Cardinals pulled away, outscoring the Buckeyes 3-1 in the second half.
UofL jumped to a 1-0 lead early in the game when sophomore Lotta Kahlert collected a rebound off of an Ohio State defender's stick and notched her second goal of the season to put the Cardinals on the scoreboard at the 2:20 mark.
Ohio State (3-5) answered midway through the first half when Kaitlyn Wagner sent a pass from the middle of the circle to Kaitlyn Wagner who was waiting on the right side of the cage to even the score at 1-1.
Less than four minutes later, the Cards pulled back ahead after sophomore Hailey Netherton's shot was turned back by Ohio State goalkeeper Liz Tamburro, but sophomore Shannon Sloss was there to send the rebound into the cage for her fifth goal of the season.
Louisville extended its lead to 3-1 when freshman Nicole Woods' send a pass from the left side of the circle to senior Becca Maddock who was waiting on the right side of the cage for her sixth goal of the season.
The Buckeyes responded less than a minute later when Wagner delivered her second goal of the game on a penalty corner with assists from Maddy Humphrey and Peanut Jones to cut the lead to 3-2 with less than 10 minutes remaining in the first half.
The Cardinals took the 3-2 lead into the break after outshooting the Buckeyes 6-4. Each team had one corner in the first half.
As the second half began, UofL wasted no time to start their offense. Within the first 34 seconds of the half, junior Elisa Garcia sent a feed from the top of the circle and Netherton deflected it into the cage for her third goal of the season to put the Cards up 4-2.
Once again, Ohio State answered, this time with an unassisted goal by Johnson who dribbled the ball into the circle and rifled a shot into the cage to make the score 4-3 at the 43:01 mark.
Louisville added an insurance goal less than two minutes later when senior Alyssa Voelmle powered a penalty corner shot past Tamburro for her sixth score of the season. Seniors Mallory Mason and Maddock provided assists on the goal.
Mason converted a penalty stroke with 13 seconds remaining in the game for the 6-3 final.
In the game, the Cardinals outshot the Buckeyes 17-7 and held a 5-2 advantage in penalty corners. Junior Sydney King (7-1) had one save in the game. Tamburro (3-5) had four stops for the Buckeyes (3-5).
Louisville (7-1) will return to ACC play when they travel to Winston-Salem, N.C. to face No. 16 Wake Forest on Sept. 26. Following that game, the Cards will stay on the road with a trip to Lynchburg, Va., where they will play Liberty University.
