LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Several former University of Louisville football stars were on display this weekend, the second of the 2014 National Football League season.
Defensive end Elvis Dumervil got things started on Thursday night. The current Baltimore Raven, who played at U of L from 2002 until 2005, notched two sacks in Baltimore's 26-6 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Pittsburgh also features a former Cardinal in defensive back William Gay, who earned credit for one tackle in the contest. Dumervil ended his Louisville career with 32 sacks, good for second on the school's all-time list, while Gay was a three-year starter and a member of the 2007 Orange Bowl team.
Linebacker Preston Brown, who was selected with the 73rd overall pick in this year's draft by the Buffalo Bills, helped the team to a 29-10 win over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. Brown made a team-high seven solo tackles against Miami, and currently leads the team with 20 stops through two weeks. The Bills also feature former Cardinal center Eric Wood.
The New York Jets, which feature three former Cardinals in running back Bilal Powell, safety Calvin Pryor, and offensive tackle Breno Giacomini, dropped a 31-24 decision to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. Powell, who carried for 2,338 yards in his Louisville career, rushed four times for 16 yards against the Packers. Pryor, who New York made the 18th pick of this year's draft, totaled five tackles in the game.
Tight end Gary Barnidge, who played at U of L from 2004 through 2007, helped the Cleveland Browns pull a 26-24 upset over the Saints yesterday by catching four passes for 41 yards.
Now in his sixth season with the Atlanta Falcons, wide receiver Harry Douglas had four receptions for 38 yards in the team's 24-10 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. One of the Louisville program's all-time great receivers, Douglas is in the school's top five for career receptions (173) and yards (2,924), and is tenth in career touchdowns (15).
Also in action on Sunday was running back Senorise Perry. Perry earned a spot on the Chicago Bears roster as an undrafted free agent this preseason. Seeing time on special teams throughout the Bears' 28-20 victory over the San Francisco 49ers, Perry handled kickoff return duties, returning one kick for 21 yards.
Outside linebacker Marcus Smith was inactive for on Monday night, when the Philadelphia Eagles faced the Indianapolis Colts. The Eagles selected Smith with the 26th pick of the first round this May.
