Louisville, Ky. - Maintaining its record of strong performances off the field, the University of Louisville women's lacrosse team was recognized by the Intercollegiate Women's lacrosse Coaches Association as an IWLCA Division I Academic Squad, the Colorado-based organization announced on Monday.
Louisville, which has earned the award for the fourth-straight year, was one of six ACC squads that qualified for the honor. In order to earn the distinction, schools are required to have a cumulative team grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.
In 2014 the Cardinals set a program record for wins (16) in addition to capturing their first conference regular-season and tournament titles. Louisville ran through league play, boasting a 7-0 record against conference foes, becoming one of just three programs to go undefeated in the BIG EAST since 2009.
After beating Georgetown in the BIG EAST Tournament title match, Louisville secured its first berth to the NCAA Tournament, where it defeated 10th-ranked Ohio State in double overtime to advance to the NCAA Sweet 16.
Louisville swept the BIG EAST's major awards for the first time in the conference's history (attack player of the year, midfielder of the year, defensive player of the year), while placing a total of eight student-athletes on the all-conference teams. Four student-athletes earned all-region honors, and each was named an IWLCA All-American - a school record. Nikki Boltja became the school's first All-America first-team selection.
