LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville men's golfer Robert Geibel was named the American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year, the league announced on Friday.
Geibel was also an all-conference selection, as was sophomore Robin Sciot-Siegrist. Geibel leads the Cardinals with a 72.6 stroke average for the season. Of his 32 rounds this season, he has scored par or better in nine. He has finished in the Top 10 in five events in 2013-14 and was in the Top 25 in seven tournaments. He also had an individual victory, winning the Warrior Wave Invitational back with a school-record 201.
The native of Pembroke Pines, Fla., Geibel led the Cardinals at the AAC Championship with a tie for fourth-place with a 1-under par 213. He finished sixth at the Cardinal Intercollegiate to help the team take a second-place finish.
Sciot-Siegrist, who qualified last season for the NCAA regional as an individual, is second on the team with a 72.8 stroke average and had four finishes in the top 10 this year. He closed the year by finishing in the top five in three of the last five events, including a pair of second-place finishes at the Purdue Invitational and the Mason Rudolph Invitational.
Geibel, Sciot-Siegrist and the rest of the Cardinals are currently preparing for play at the NCAA Auburn Regional. The regional tournament begins Thursday at the Auburn University Club. The top five squads in each of six regionals will advance to the NCAA Championship.
