Volleyball Falls to Miami
November 07, 2014 | Women's Volleyball
UofL , 6-6 in the ACC and 14-10 overall, hit .089 but outblocked the Hurricanes 8-6. Maya McClendon had seven kills with Tess Clark adding three blocks. The Canes were led by Kelsie Groot and Taylor Scott, who each had 12 kills. Miami recorded five aces led by Haley Templeton's three.
"Passing continues to be our Achilles heel," said UofL head coach Anne Kordes. "It makes it a struggle to get our middles involved . We had to rely on our outsides and I thought Janelle Jenkins had a great match offensively, defensively and the stat sheet does not show all the things she was doing for us. Miami is in late season form and they picked us apart and limited our options which is tough to overcome."
The Cardinals fell victim to a 6-1 in the first set as Miami went ahead 15-9 and UofL had to play catch-up. Setter Katie George served for three straight points to come within four at 21-18 and sparked a Miami timeout. After the teams traded points, Gabbie Wiley aced Miami to come within two at 24-22 but a kill by UM's Kelsie Groot gave the Hurricanes the 25-22 win.
The Cardinals led 13-10 in the second set but let the Hurricanes go on an 8-0 run to trail 18-13. UofL had two blocks and a Katie George dump for a kill to come to within three at 21-18 and force a UM timeout. Two Hurricane service errors and a Tess Clark slide put the Cards in striking distance at 23-21. But UM answered with two straight, including a kill by Taylor Scott, her ninth of the match.
The Cardinals were up 8-3 in the third set but another Hurricane rally, this one an 8-2 spurt, put the Canes on top and -.103 hitting by UofL hampered an answering rally before falling 25-15.
The Cards head to South Bend to face the Irish on Sunday as ACC action continues.
