Men's Golf Fall Recap
November 20, 2014 | Men's Golf
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's golf team has officially closed the fall portion of their 2014-15 schedule. The Cardinals put together a strong showing between September and November, and will look to carry that momentum into the spring season.
The Cardinals earned their first tournament win of the season on Sept. 30, when they bested the field at the Cardinal Intercollegiate. The two-day tournament was held at the University of Louisville Golf Club in Simpsonville, Ky. The Cardinals topped the 16-team field by overcoming a nine-stroke deficit in the third round to post a team score of 870, shooting one stroke better than second place finisher Louisiana-Monroe. Robert Geibel lead the charge to help the Cardinals capture their first win. The 2013-14 American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year shot steady rounds of 72-71-72 to finish the event tied for third with a 215 score. Senior Max Walz also earned a top-ten finish, shooting 74-72-72= 218 to tie for tenth place.
Before winning the Cardinal, Louisville competed in the DICK'S Sporting Goods Collegiate Challenge Cup, an annual event which pits members of the Atlantic Coast and Southeastern Conferences against each other. The event marked the first for the Cardinals, who will continue to compete in the tournament as members of the ACC. Picking up a sixth place finish with a team score of 868, the Cardinals lost to Georgia in the matchplay portion of the event, but picked up individual wins for J.D. Lehman and Robin Sciot-Siegrist. As a conference, the ACC won the event, with Georgia Tech topping the team play field with a score of 848.
At the Warrior Wave Invitational in Kauai, Hawaii, the Cardinals earned a third place finish to mark their second top three showing of the fall. After shooting 283 as a team in the first round, the Cardinals fired a tournament-low and school record 19-under par 269 in the second round. A 274 third round on the tournament's final day helped the Cards finish with a score of 826, just two strokes behind second place finisher Arizona State (824) and 17 strokes back of Georgia Tech, who won the event. Sciot-Siegrist and senior Antoine LeSaux were top performers for the Cardinals. Sciot-Siegrist shot a season-best 13-under par 203 to finish tied for seventh, while LeSaux's 207 tied him for 13th place.
"I was pleased with both our consistency and improvement throughout the fall. We had contributions from each of the players," head coach Mark Crabtree said.
"Our first two events, the Northern and the ACC-SEC Challenge, proved successful as we competed against nationally ranked opponents and captured some quality wins. Once again, the team completed the fall season with a great performance in Hawaii led by a school record second round of 269. Spring 2015 looks very promising for the Cardinals as we approach our first ACC Championship and taking the next step at the NCAA tournament."
