Women's Soccer Defeats Pittsburgh 1-0 in Overtime
October 23, 2014 | Women's Soccer
Freshman Inger Katrine Bjerke scored off a penalty kick rebound in the 93rd minute to give the Cardinals a 1-0 win at Pittsburgh on Thursday evening at Ambrose Urbanic Field. The Cardinals improve to 7-7-2 overall and 3-3-2 in ACC play.
"I thought we played very well I the first half and created some great chances, it was unfortunate that we couldn't capitalize when we had a bit of the momentum," head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes said. "In the second half, Pitt started to generate some attacking chances but we did well defensively to keep them from scoring. The penalty kick involved three freshmen, who continue to play vital roles in our success. Isabella (Habuda) was fouled in the box, Chatham (DeProspo) took the penalty kick and Inger Katrine Bjerke followed up the rebound for her first goal of the season. All in all I am happy with our overall performance and now we will get refocused for an excellent Notre Dame team."
Pittsburgh had the first chance in the opening minute but Cardinal keeper Paige Brown made the save. The Cardinals had a chance in the fourth minute off a shot by Lexie Niedoba but Pitt's Taylor Francis made the save. In the 17th minute Alison Price's header was saved by Francis again.
Pitt had another chance in the 33rd minute but Brown collected the shot for a save. Isabella Habuda had a chance in the 42nd minute but the keeper was there for the save. Louisville finished the first half with a 9-2 shot advantage and a 3-0 corner kick advantage.
Pittsburgh pressed more offensively in the second half, but the Cards' backline kept them from getting a shot on goal. DeProspo had opportunities in the 60th and 63rd minutes but Francis was able to collect both shots.
Sophomore Kari Weinland had a chance in the 75th minute but once again Francis made the save. Pitt had a shot go wide and one blocked by the Louisville defense in the final three minutes of the half, forcing an overtime period.
Just three minutes into the overtime period, Habuda was taken down in the box. Louisville was awarded their first penalty kick of the season. DeProspo took the penalty kick but Francis made the save, punching the ball back out into play. Bjerke collected the rebound and sent it to the back of the net for the 1-0 win.
Louisville finished the match with a 17-6 shot advantage and a 4-2 corner kick advantage. Brown finished with two saves while Francis finished with eight saves.
The Cardinals return to action on Sunday, Oct. 26 when they travel to Notre Dame to face the Fighting Irish in a 1:00 p.m. contest. The game will be broadcasted on ESPN3.
