Laura Blab's 12 kills and two blocks were not enough as the University of Louisville volleyball team fell to the No. 4-ranked Florida State Friday night at the KFC Yum! Center.
"We were right there. I thought the glaring difference of was defense tonight. We got outdug 81-69," said Anne Kordes, UofL head coach. "Our big block forced the issue. Katie George set an incredible match and there are moments where she puts us on her back and carries us which is exciting to watch. We aren't happy with the loss but at least there was blood in the water. Tonight will breathe life into the team."
The Cards hit .124 and were out-dug 81-69 but did have 10 blocks, led by Janelle Jenkins' seven. Katie George had a double-double with 37 assists and 12 digs. FSU had 64 kills to UofL's 46. Maya McClendon had 15 digs and nine.
In the first set, the Cards traded points with FSU until, tied at 14, the Noles got some breathing room with a 3-1 run. UofL battled back to within one at 19-8 but a 5-0 run took FSU to 24-18 lead. The Cards dug in and scored three points before falling 25-21. Katie George had three kills as did Janelle Jenkins for the win.
In the second set, UofL popped out to a 9-3 lead but FSU kept chipping away and used a 5-0 late in the set to go up 22-21. The teams traded points until FSU got to set point at 24-22. The Cards pushed back with four straight points for the 26-24 win.
Florida State surged to an 8-2 lead early in the third set and then used a 6-0 run to go up 16-6. The Cards chipped away, enough so that that FSU called time out with a 22-17 lead. Louisville would score just once more as FSU's .314 hitting took its toll for the 25-18 win.
The upset-minded Cardinals pushed the Seminoles in the fourth set and tied at 14. The teams traded points and the Cards watched as FSU scored five straight to get to match point at 24-18. UofL staved off the Noles for three points but a kill by Milica Kubura gave FSU the point and match.
The Cardinals play Notre Dame at 2 p.m. at the KFC Yum! Center.
