LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville field hockey coach Justine Sowry has released the 2013 schedule. The Cardinals' 19-game schedule will include 10 home games and six teams ranked in the National Field Hockey Coaches' Association top 25.
"We are very excited about our upcoming season, with a challenging and demanding non-conference schedule as well as the finale in the BIG EAST Conference," said Sowry. "Our opponents include the 'usual' foes with strong rivalries as well as some new and unfamiliar teams. This year is going to be a fantastic one to showcase our team around the country and will be a great preview for what is going to be expected when we transition into the ACC in 2014. Our team is a year older, a year smarter and we all have higher expectations."
Louisville will travel to Bloomington, Ind. , for a preseason scrimmage against the Hoosiers on Aug. 24. A week later, the Cardinals will open the season at Virginia on Aug. 30 and will travel to Richmond on Sept. 1.
The Cards will begin play at Trager Stadium on Sept. 6 when they face William & Mary and will wrap up their home opening weekend against Ohio on Sept. 8.
The following weekend, U of L will go back on the road, this time to Ann Arbor, Mich., to face UC Davis in a neutral site game on Sept. 13. On Sept. 14 the Cards will play Michigan, which finished the 2012 season ranked ninth in the country.
Louisville will return to the friendly confines of Trager Stadium to play host to eighth-ranked Old Dominion on Sept. 20. The game will mark the BIG EAST Conference opener for the Cards, who are competing in their final season and the Monarchs, who will be in their inaugural season as members of the league. Louisville and Northeastern will meet on Sept. 22 at Trager Stadium.
The Cardinals continue BIG EAST play when they travel to College Park, Md., to play Georgetown on Sept. 28.
The month of October brings mid-week road trip to Columbus, Ohio where the Cards will take on Ohio State on Oct. 1. Louisville will welcome BIG EAST foe Temple to Trager Stadium on Oct. 4 and will play Indiana on Oct. 6.
The next weekend, the Cardinals will continue league play when they travel to Storrs, Conn. , face No. 4 Connecticut and then take a trip to Providence, R.I. to face Brown. Rutgers and Northwestern will visit Trager Stadium on Oct. 19 and 20 respectively. A road trip to conference opponent Villanova on Oct. 27 will close out the month of October.
Louisville will conclude the regular season at Trager Stadium when the Cards play host to Providence on Nov. 1 and celebrate Senior Day on Nov. 3 against Kent State.
The BIG EAST Championship will take place Nov. 8-10 at Connecticut.
