COLUMBUS, Ohio - Playing with nothing to lose, freshman Robin Sciot-Siegrist recorded his best round at the NCAA Men's Golf Regional at the Ohio State University Club on Saturday.
Sciot-Siegrist, an All-BIG EAST selection, fired a 1-over par in the final round Saturday on the Scarlet Course (par 71, 7,268 yards) to finish in a tie for 51st place overall at 14-over par.
After playing the first two rounds at 13-over par, Sciot-Siegrist gave a glimpse into the future by not giving up and improving on his Friday score by six shots. For the three-day event, Sciot-Siegrist carded 77-78-72=227.
"I thought he played a good round," head coach Mark Crabtree said. "He drove the ball better. Overall, he play was much better. He putted better. It was a good solid round of golf. I'm sure he is a little disappointed, but I thought he played well. I thought he hung in there. He finished off a really good year with a nice round of golf."
Sciot-Siegrist teed off for the third-straight time on the back nine, where he played the first two rounds at 10-over par. However, Sciot-Siegrist battled back to play the same holes at even par on Saturday.
He opened play with an impressive birdie on the tenth hole and another one on the 12th. He only had two bogeys on the back nine and also registered five pars.
"I don't think something else changed from the two other days," Sciot-Siegrist. "I had the same strategy. I just played a little bit better and changed something on my putting."
Heading into his final nine holes of the season at even par for the day, Sciot-Siegrist recorded two more birdies on the fourth and sixth holes to move to 1-under par for the round.
However, bogeys on seven and eight moved him over par for the round, but the true freshman showed a lot of grit and determination to hang in there.
"One over is a good score on this course," Sciot-Siegrist said. "If I had putted better and did a few other things better, I could have done a little better." With three years of eligibility remaining, the future is bright for Sciot-Siegrist, who set the school's freshmen record for top 10 finishes with eight.
"He is just going to be a really good player," Crabtree said. "He has all the instincts. He has all the tools. Everything about Robin is very impressive. He will have an outstanding career and he will be even better next year."
The Cardinals return their top four players so the future of Louisville golf is extremely bright, and Sciot-Siegrist will definitely be the leader next season.
"I didn't think that I would play this well in my first year," Sciot-Siegrist said. "I just came to America to see what was going to happen. I had eight top 10 finishes this year, and I just hope I can do better next year."
