Junior shortstop Whitney Arion provides the final recap of this year's Oklahoma City Challenge. The teams entered Tuesday's events with the Red Squad holding a 450 to 400 lead over the Black Squad.
The OKC Challenge of 2014 has officially come to an end for the Louisville softball team. After four long mornings of physical and mental exhaustion, the squads had to buckle down and do whatever they needed to do to win! The last day is always the craziest. Teena's devised plans are creative and complex always make for a huge part of all the excitement. Today was for all the marbles- today's winner is this year's OKC Challenge champion.
An old one, but a good one...
We finished our final OKC challenge at Trager Center. This is our football indoor facility where we spend the majority of our time training during the months of January and February. The morning started out by being locked out of the facility in the freezing cold while our trainers set everything up. Making each team even more anxious than we already were, mostly because we just wanted to know what in the world we would be doing today and also to stay out of the cold weather as long as possible. The first order of business was for the captains. They were to once again create a line up sheet. Once this was done we were ready for battle. We began with a bonus opportunity of tug-of-war. This seems to be a recurring event, which is completely fine by all of us taking into account how much fun it is and I'm sure very entertaining for everyone else watching. It was best out of three and the Black Squad won this event to even the overall score at 450 points each.
And now for the grand finale...
Now it was the moment we all have been waiting for, the final event! Teena had many implements laid out for both teams: a stationary bike set on gear 14, a huge wooden sled, a smaller weighted sled, a 40 pound medicine ball and two 50 pound dumbbells. According to the layout of our lineups, each person had to complete each task in an orderly fashion. First we had to ride .3 miles on the bike. Next was the wooden sled, pushing it a total of 50 yards before pulling the weighted sled the same distance, pedaling backwards the entire time. This was the hardest part considering the marathon we won the previous morning. It was safe to say that everyone's legs were close to dead.
The relief came when it was time to finish with the medicine ball and dumbbells. We had to carry them as fast as we could 25 yards and back, crossing the line in which allowed the next teammate to begin her turn. The combination of all of these tasks was draining and we had four rounds of this! There were nine spots on the lineup so by the time everyone got through; we were running short on time. Teena had to adjust each round by involving only a few of the implements instead of all five. No matter what implements were included the Black Squad was on a roll, performing better than ever.
The final round came to an end and the Black Squad was crowned 2014 OKC Champions!
