BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - - The University of Louisville field hockey team defeated Ohio University 2-1 Saturday afternoon at the IU Field Hockey Complex in Bloomington, Ind. The Cardinals improve to 4-2 while the Bobcats fall to 2-2 on the season.
"I am so proud of the effort and application today after a tough game yesterday," said U of L head coach Justine Sowry. "It was not a pretty win but we are continuing to grow and learn. Our start was much improved and first half was solid. There were times where we had to absorb a lot of pressure, particularly late in the game. Our defense held strong and we were rewarded with a win that we earned."
The teams played through 34 scoreless minutes in the first half before the Cards broke through with a goal with 41 seconds remaining in the half. Freshman Elisa Garcia notched her first career goal when she dribbled the ball into the circle and delivered a shot past Ohio's Brittany Walker. Louisville took the 1-0 lead into the break after outshooting Ohio 7-4 and holding a 7-3 advantage in penalty corners.
In the second half, Ohio held an 8-2 lead in shots and a 5-2 edge in corners. The Bobcats answered midway through the second half when Caelyn Hartley notched an unassisted goal to knot the score at 1-1 at the 54:44 mark in the game.
The Cardinals wasted little time regaining the lead when two minutes later, sophomore Paige Monsen delivered her first career goal to give Louisville the 2-1 win.
Senior goalkeeper Erin Conrad (4-2) posted nine saves in the win while Ohio's Walker stopped five shots. Ohio outshot Louisville 12-9 in the game and the teams earned eight corners apiece.
U of L will continue its road swing next weekend when the Cards take on Central Michigan in East Lansing, Mich., on Sept. 14. , and either Michigan State or American University on Sept. 16.
