Field Hockey Edges Central Michigan 3-2 in Double OT

EAST LANSING, Mich. - - Sophomore Alyssa Voelmle's goal in double overtime lifted the University of Louisville field hockey team to a 3-2 win over Central Michigan in the first game of the Auto Owners Insurance Spartan Invitational Friday evening. The Cards (5-2) will face the winner of American University and No 20 Michigan State on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the tournament's championship game.
"That was a tough game to play and we are obviously happy with the outcome," said U of L head coach Justine Sowry. "Central Michigan was a difficult opponent and we were able to adapt to the style and were able to handle the momentum changes in the game.
Central Michigan (3-3) got on the scoreboard midway through the first half when Abby Roth registered an unassisted goal at the 15:41 mark.
The Cardinals responded for minutes later when freshman Elisa Garcia connected on a pass from sophomore Becca Maddock for her second goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1.
The Chippewas quickly regained the lead on a goal by Mary Alice Moore at the 20:50 mark.
Once again Louisville answered, this time with Maddock's team-leading fifth goal of the season which evened at the score at 2-2 at the 25:53 mark.
At halftime, the game remained tied at 2-2 with Louisville holding an 8-5 edge in shots and each team drawing four penalty corners. The teams played through a scoreless second half with Louisville outshooting CMU 6-4 and holding a 2-1 edge in corners.
Still tied at 2-2, the game entered a 15 minute sudden-victory overtime period in which the Cards held the edge in shots (3-1) and penalty corners (2-0), but the score held at 2-2, sending the game into a second overtime period.
Just 1:01 into the second overtime, Voelmle delivered her second goal of the season on a feed from Garcia to give the Cards their fifth win of the season.
In the game, Louisville outshot Central Michigan 19-11 and held an 8-5 edge in corners. Senior goalkeeper Erin Conrad (5-2) collected five saves for the Cards while CMU's Anastasia Netto had five stops for the Chippewas.
"If we look at the big picture, there are still many areas we must continue to improve upon but we are moving in the right direction," said Sowry. "We now look forward to the Championship game on Sunday to finish the weekend strong."
