LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The wait for football season is nearly over.
In just about an hour, the University of Louisville football team will hold its first fall practice at the fields at the Howard Schnellenberger Football Complex on Floyd Street, just north of Papa John's Cardinal Stadium. The session will be the first of two open to the media and public, with the other open practice taking place on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
A total of 104 student-athletes will be in attendance under third-year head coach Charlie Strong, who's led the Cardinals to a BIG EAST title and consecutive bowl appearances.

- At BIG EAST Media Day in on July 31 in Newport, R.I., the Cardinals were picked to win the league for the time since entering the conference in 2005-06. Last time Louisville was picked in the preseason coaches' poll to win the league was 2006.
- The Cardinals return 18 starters from the 2011 squad that captured the league title and reached the 2011 Belk Bowl.
- Head coach Charlie Strong returns for his third season at the helm. The 2006 BIG EAST Coach of the Year, he is only the third coach in U of L history to guide his first two teams to bowl games and 14 wins.
LOUISVILLE FAN DAY
The annual University of Louisville Football fan day has been slated for Sunday, Aug. 12, on the concourse of Papa John's Cardinal Stadium from noon to 2:30 p.m.
Gates for the event will open at noon with an autograph session. Head coach Charlie Strong, the coaching staff and the players will sign autographs on the concourse. The offensive players will be on the east side of the stadium, with the defense sitting at the closed end of the stadium at Gate 4.
Fans will be given posters as they enter the gates and are allowed to bring one other item to be signed. Due to time constraints, no pictures with the players will be allowed, and the Charlie Strong commemorative Maker's Mark bottles are prohibited from being signed by the players or coach Strong at this event.
COLLEGE COLORS DAY
With the fall athletics season just weeks away, Louisville fans are encouraged to follow the Cardinals by participating in several social media initiatives beginning today, highlighted by the "Paint Your State" campaign and nation-wide "College Colors Day" competition, department officials announced today.
In addition to helping turn the entire country red, fans can register and support Louisville by participating in ESPN.com's College Colors Day and then wear red on August 31 in support of this initiative. The participating institution with the most registrants will be announced August 31 on ESPN as the winner of College Colors Day.
