LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville field hockey team turned in a solid performance in a preseason scrimmage against IU Friday afternoon at Trager Stadium. The Cards defeated the Hoosiers 3-0 in regulation and 1-0 in a 7 v 7 overtime period. The scrimmage concluded with a shootout which Louisville won 3-1.
"It was a great game, a great first step for us," said U of L head coach Justine Sowry. "When you only have eight days of hockey to prepare, I think this is definitely something we can build upon. Erin Conrad had a great performance and our back fielders in general were pretty good."
In the first half of play, the Hoosiers held a 4-3 edge in shots and a 3-2 advantage in corners, but the Cards broke through when freshman Kendall Weedling connected on a pass from junior Erin Schneidtmiller. Senior goalkeeper Erin Conrad came through with four stops to hold the Hoosiers scoreless in the first half. Louisville's offense ignited after the break, delivering six shots to Indiana's two. Freshman Victoria Stratton tipped a penalty corner shot from freshman Elisa Garcia to make the score 2-0 at the 42:04 mark in the game. Stratton notched another goal with a corner feed from sophomore Mallory Mason increase the lead to 3-0 midway through the second half. At the conclusion of regulation, the Cards held a 9-6 advantage in shots and the teams had five corners apiece.
The scrimmage proceeded to a 7 v 7 sudden-victory overtime period. Seven minutes into the period, sophomore Alyssa Voelmle delivered a pass to Becca Maddock.
The teams wrapped up the day with a best-of-five shootout. Voelmle, senior Amber Thomas and freshman Elisa Garcia converted on their attempts for the Cards while Audra Heilman put a ball in the cage for the Hoosiers. Conrad finished the day with seven saves while Viki Green collected four saves in the contest.
The Cardinals will open the 2012 season on Aug. 24 when they play host to Northeastern at 6 p.m. in the first game of the Sherrill Brakmeier Classic.
