University of Louisville head field hockey coach Justine Sowry has announced that the 2012 schedule has been finalized. The 2012 slate features nine home games as well as the 2012 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship which will be held Nov. 2-4 at Trager Stadium. The Cards will face eight teams that finished last season ranked in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association's top 20 including NCAA semifinalist Connecticut.
"The season is fast approaching and we are all excited about putting into play all of our hard work over the spring season," said Sowry. "We definitely learned a lot of lessons in the last 12 months and the 2012 schedule gives us an amazing opportunity to set ourselves up for a great season. The schedule presents different challenges for us including the strength of opposition, travel and timing of games. It culminates in Louisville hosting the Big East Championships in November which we are thrilled about."
The Cards will begin with a preseason tune-up when they play host to Indiana in a scrimmage on Aug. 17. A week later, they will officially kick off the season when they hold the Cardinal Classic Tournament Aug. 24-26 which will feature Northeastern, Northwestern and Miami (Ohio).
The first weekend of September will bring Davidson and Ball State to Trager Stadium to complete a four-game season-opening home stand. The Cardinals will hit the road to play a pair of games in Bloomington, Ind., where they will face Indiana and Ohio University. Louisville will complete the four-game road swing with a trip to East Lansing, Mich., where they will face Central Michigan and either American University or Michigan State.
The Cardinals will open BIGEAST Conference play on Sept. 21 when Georgetown visits Trager Stadium. After a matchup with Kent State on Sept. 23, Louisville will resume league play with a trip to Syracuse on Sept. 29. The Cards will remain in New York to face Albany on Sept. 30 before returning to Trager Stadium to face 2011 NCAA semifinalist Connecticut on Oct. 6 and Iowa on Oct. 7.
Louisville will travel to Rutgers for another conference tilt on Oct. 12 and will close out the weekend with a game at Wake Forest on Oct. 14. The Cards will play host to BIG EAST foe Villanova on Oct. 20 and will wrap up regular season play at Trager Stadium on Oct. 22 against Ohio State. Louisville will travel to Providence for the regular season finale on Oct. 27.
Trager Stadium will serve as the host site for the 2012 BIG EAST Conference Field Hockey Championship which will take place Nov. 2-4. This will mark the second time the league tournament has been held at Trager Stadium - Louisville was also selected to host in 2006.
