Louisville, Ky. - - The University of Louisville football team conducted its first full scrimmage of the spring, running about 120 plays on Saturday morning.
Head coach Charlie Strong put his team through a situational scrimmage with third-down plays, coming out of their own end zone and red-zone situations. The defense won the scrimmage, totaling a 19-18 win over the offense.
"We have a long way to go as a football team," said Strong. "There were a lot of good things out there on both sides of the football, but we are half-way through the spring and will continue to work."
The Cardinals received an eight-yard touchdown run by junior Jeremy Wright and a 13-yard touchdown reception by junior tight end Ryan Hubbell on a pass from senior Will Stein. Wright was the leading rusher on the morning, while juniors Dominique Brown and Senorise Perry ran well. Perry and red-shirt freshman Corvin Lamb each fumbled once on Saturday.
Red-shirt freshmen kickers John Wallace and Andrew Fletcher each converted on short field goals for the other scoring plays during the scrimmage. Defensive coordinator Vance Bedford singled out Marcus Smith on the defensive line as a player who played well on Saturday, while offensive coordinator Shawn Watson was pleased with Wright and the play of sophomore quarterback Teddy Bridgewater.
Sophomore wide receivers Eli Rogers and DeVante Parker each had receptions of over 60 yards in the scrimmage.
The Cardinals return to the practice field on Monday afternoon at 4 p.m.
