Louisville - The University of Louisville opened its third season under head coach Charlie Strong as the Cardinals officially kicked off spring practice on Wednesday afternoon.
With temperatures' reaching 80 degrees, the Cardinals practiced for a little over two hours in helmets in front of a large crowd, who ventured out to get a glimpse of what is expected to be Strong's ve most complete team.
Coming off a 7-6 season and winning a share of the BIG EAST title, the Cardinals return at least 18 starters, including BIG EAST Newcomer of the Year in sophomore Teddy Bridgewater and a number of key offensive weapons.
"I was pleased with the first day," said Strong. "The guys gave a good effort for the first time out. I told them we are going to keep grinding them all the time. They have to be ready to give a great effort every time they step on the field. We know a lot is going to be written about this team so we have to focus and compete on every snap."
The Cardinals worked on individual drills and spent a lot of time on special teams. Louisville welcomes Keith Brown, James Burgess, Gerod Holliman, as well as, transfers Gerald Christian and Robert Clark as mid-year enrollees. Holliman is coming off shoulder surgery and will be limited all spring.
Bridgewater, working with Alex Kupper and Jamon Brown at tackles, was sharp throwing the football to starting wide receivers Andrell Smith and DeVante Parker. Aaron Epps moved from offensive tackle to tight end, while Hunter Stout was shifted to defensive line, as well as, Stephan Robinson, who was moved from cornerback to wide receiver. Charles Gaines was limited because of injury, but was also back at cornerback.
The Cardinals return to the practice field again on Friday at 4 p.m. and Saturday at 10 a.m.
