LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Senior Kristin Austin was 3 for 3 with a run and freshman Kayla Soles was 2 for 3 with four RBI as the No. 16/17 University of Louisville softball team defeated Saint Louis 9-0 in five innings to improve to 18-0 on the season Sunday in the Red & Black Tournament at Ulmer Stadium.
"I felt like we came out a little flat today," said head coach Sandy Pearsall. "We've got to be focused and aggressive and come ready to play every game and respect everybody we play, because there are a lot of great teams out there."
The Cardinals jumped to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Junior Jennifer Esteban led off the inning with an infield single and took second on Austin's bunt. Sophomore Katie Keller walked to load the bases. Esteban came home when sophomore Taner Fowler reached on a fielder's choice that saw Austin out at second. Junior Alicja Wolny drew a walk and came around to score on Soles' two-out, two-run double to make the score 4-0.
Louisville used five hits and a wild pitch to tally five more runs in the fourth. Freshman Whitney Arion registered a leadoff hit and Austin followed with her third single of the game. Keller connected on an RBI double. Fowler's fielder's choice loaded the bases for Trimble's RBI single. Wolny's groundout sent Keller home. Fowler crossed the plate on a wild pitch and Soles' base hit plated Trimble for the 9-0 final.
Leonard (5-0) went the distance in the shutout, scattering two hits and striking out five in 5.0 innings.
Julian Austin (2-4) took the loss, allowing nine earned runs on 10 hits and striking out two in 4.0 innings. Kelly Flanagan accounted for both of the Saint Louis hits in the game.
The Cardinals (18-0) are back in action Monday when they play host to Illinois State at noon.
