Lola Arslanbekova notched a double-double with match-high 17 kills and 13 digs, adding two blocks to her point total to lead the University of Louisville to a 3-1 win over Virginia at the Baymont Bobcat Classic Saturday morning in Athens, Ohio.
U of L moves to 7-2 with the 25-16, 21-25, 25-23, 25-18 win. Virginia moves to 5-3. The Cardinals outhit UVa .254 to .174 and had 63 kills to the Cavs' 50. Brooke Mattingly added 12 kills and Emily Juhl joined in the double digit kills with 14. The Cavs were led by Simone Asque's 15 kills.
"It was a huge win for us because Virginia is a strong ACC team and the biggest team we faced so far," said U of L head coach Anne Kordes. "We relied on defense and I thought Maci Wachtel came in a did a great job in the back row for us. This was also two solid back-to-back matches for Kaitlynn James. Good to see Lola Arslanbekova get a double-double with kills and digs."
In the first set, U of L blew out to a 10-4 lead and then increased the lead to eight at 16-8 on a Kaitlynn James kill. After UVa burned both timeouts, Lola Arslanbekova took over and had three kills down the stretch. U of L got to set point on a UVa service error. Emily Juhl prolonged the set by going long before James put one down cross court for the 25-16 win. The Cards hit .244, and Juhl added four kills.
In the second set, U of L stayed close but a 3-0 run by the Cavs pushed UVa to a 14-11 lead. The teams traded points, before U of L tied at 17 on an Arslanbekova kill. The Cavs scored on a kill by Simone Asque to go up 18-17 and never relinquished the lead. U of L got to within one at 21-20 on a block by Tanya Lukyanenko and Arslanbekova but were outscored 4-1 down the stretch for the 25-21 loss. U of L hit .180 and had three blocks. Lola led with five kills.
U of L fell behind 9-4 early as the victim of a 6-1 run in the third. The Cards responded with a 5-1 run of their own, prompting a UVa timeout when the Cards cut the lead to 12-9. Two Mattingly kills and two Lola kills sparked the drive. The Cardinals tied at 19 on a kill by Mattingly and then took their first lead at 20-19 on a kill by Arslanbekova. Emily Juhl took the Cardinals to set point at 24-22 but after a kill by Tobi Farrar, Juhl took another one deep for the 25-23 win. The Cardinals' hitting warmed to .365.
In the final frame, the Cards blew out to a 6-2 lead and padded the margin with a 5-0 run to go up 14-5. After three blocks and a Caitlin Welch ace, UVa called timeout. UVa had a 5-2 run but U of L was not rattled and two consecutive Brooke Mattingly kills took the Cardinals to 20-14. The teams traded points but the Cardinal margin was too wide to overcome as U of L notched the 25-18 win.
U of L plays Marshall at 7:30 tonight in the final matchup at the Baymont Bobcat Classic.
