The University of Louisville field hockey team fell 2-1 to host Iowa in a preseason exhibition Friday afternoon.
"There were so many positives from this game that I am not really concerned with the result," said head coach Justine Sowry. "We competed with one of the most improved teams in the country. We chose to rest some of our keys players today, but on the flip side, we were able to play 17 players - including five freshmen - which is going to be invaluable as we move into the opening weekend and beyond."
The Hawkeyes capitalized on a penalty corner at the 10:43 mark in the game. Jessica Barnett put her team on the scoreboard with an assist from Kelsey Mitchell.
The game entered halftime with Iowa holding a the edge in shots 5-3 and corners 3-1. Louisville goalkeeper Erin Conrad turned back three shots while Iowa's Kathleen McGraw had two saves in the first half.
Corinne Allen added to the lead midway through the second half when she tipped a shot from Sarah Drake to make the score 2-0.
The Cards got on the scoreboard when freshman Katlyn Soucy registered unassisted goal with just under three minutes remaining in the game.
Iowa finished the game with a 17-5 advantage in shots and an 8-1 lead in penalty corners. Conrad had nine saves while McGraw had three stops for the Hawkeyes.
"Iowa is a tough Big Ten opponent who in the spring gave us a lesson in how to play hockey," said Sowry. "Today we were ready for them and played tough for 85 minutes. Although they had more possession of the ball, we were able develop our units all over the field.
Louisville will continue its preseason preparation when it hosts the annual alumnae game Sunday, August 21 at 2 p.m.
