LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville women's lacrosse team will depart on Tuesday, May 31, for its first international trip in program history, visiting the countries of England, Portugal and Spain.
"The opportunity to travel abroad and visit England, Portugal and Spain is tremendous," head coach Kellie Young says. "We are thrilled to compete against the English National Team and its U-19 team as well as give back to the global community by volunteering with ACCA [supporting children in need in the Algarve] during our stay in Portugal. This trip is a once in a lifetime opportunity for many of our players and staff members."
During their trip, the Cardinals will be updating UofLsports.com with a regularly updated blog.
Per NCAA legislation, member institutions are permitted one international tour every four years in each sport. Foreign tour teams should consist only of those student-athletes eligible for participation in intercollegiate play under University and NCAA eligibility requirements. Freshmen and incoming junior college transfer student-athletes are eligible, provided the international competition begins after the official starting practice date in the sport or after the first official day of classes at the University, whichever comes first.
The team is scheduled to first arrive in London, where it will take a tour of the city and visit multiple historical sites. The Cardinals will face the English National Team on the second day of their tour and then turn around and play the U-19 English National Team the following day.
Louisville then departs for Portugal, arriving in the city of Lisbon and taking a scenic tour of Algarve, the southernmost region of mainland Portugal and an area known for its plentiful beaches and cuisine.
The following two days, the Cardinals will compete in morning exhibitions in Portugal and then are scheduled to play host to lacrosse clinics with disadvantaged children via the partnership with ACCA.
The final three days consist of a trip to Seville, Spain, where the team will have the chance to tour the area and experience many cultural activities.
The Cardinals are slated to return to the country on June 10.
Louisville is coming off its fourth season in program history, where it went 10-7, had four players earn all-BIG EAST honors, five tabbed to the all-West/Midwest Region and three selected to participate in the IWLCA/Under Armour Division I North-South Senior All-Star game.
