LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville women's lacrosse head coach Kellie Young has selected Bergan Foley, Jamie Ward and Liz Lovejoy as the 2011 team captains.
Ward now has been tabbed a captain for the fourth straight-season, while Foley becomes a second-year captain, and Lovejoy earns the distinction for the first time.
"I am very proud of Liz and thrilled to honor her as a captain for her final season." Young says. "She has accomplished so much in her three-and-a-half years - becoming a fierce attacker on the crease, a positive presence in practice - day in and day out - and helping us maintain a standard of excellence with the team. I look forward to working with Liz and utilizing her unique leadership strengths to guide the team in 2011."
A Greenwich, Conn., native, Lovejoy started 15 games last year and tallied a career-high 46 goals, second most on the team. Lovejoy surpassed the 100-goal mark in 2010 and owns 117 for her career. She ranked third on the squad in points (55) last season and registered four man-down goals.
A senior defender, Ward started all 17 contests last year and ranked third on the team in caused turnovers (23) and was tied for fourth in ground balls (30). She averaged less than a turnover a game (0.82) and helped contribute to the team's top-10 ranking in caused turnovers (eighth).
"For three-and-a-half years, Jamie has been our team-building leader," Young adds. "She's always the player to inspire Cardinal pride, lift teammates' spirits and use quotes as game day motivation. This winter, Jamie also became our defensive leader. She has found her voice, directing our defense and setting expectations for our team that are higher than ever."
Foley, a 2010 first-team all-BIG EAST selection and a second team IWLCA all-West Region honoree, was the nation's leading goal scorer last season, ranking first in goals (78) and goals per game (4.59). It marks the second time in her three-year career that she has led the nation in goals per game. Foley finished the year ranking in the top 10 in two additional offensive categories: fourth in points per game (4.94) and 10th in points (84).
"Bergan enters her second year as a captain for our lacrosse program," Young says. "She leads with fire and motivation, setting our performance standard day in and day out, both vocally and through her actions. She knows what she wants and she's willing to do what she needs to get it and players simply follow her lead."
On Feb. 20, the lacrosse team opens its 2011 campaign against Binghamton, with first draw at 1 p.m. at the U of L Lacrosse Stadium.
