Louisville, Ky.- - The University of Louisville men's golf team will open the 2011 spring season when the Cardinals travel to Mobile, Ala. for the Mobile Intercollegiate on February 21-22 at Magnolia Grove Crossings Golf Course, (par 72, 7,212 yards).
Louisville will be a young team with only one senior on the 2011 roster in Karsten Clements. The product of Elizabethtown, Ky., Clements is the most experienced returning performer for head coach Mark Crabtree, who enters his 12th season as head coach of the Cardinals.
Clements is the team captain and leader of the Cardinals. He led the team in scoring in the fall at 73.5 and had one top 10 finish. Crabtree is looking for more success this spring. Crabtree thinks Clements is very capable of putting together low rounds together and his consistency will really benefit the team as it looks to win another BIG EAST Conference Championship.
Junior Chris Biuso is the team's top returning Big East performer from a year ago. Crabtree is looking Biuso to step up and be a more consistent performer for team this season. He is considered the best putter on the team and has given the Cardinals some very good rounds in his first two seasons.
One of the more consistent players is another junior in Justin Dorward. Crabtree thinks Dorward is really developing into one of our "go to" guys! He is the team's best ball strikers and could be ready for his best season this spring.
Newcomer Sebastian Szirmak is one of the most dynamic players. According to Crabtree, Szirmak possesses the skills to be a very accomplished Cardinal. He needs to continue to learn to play and score, but Crabtree feels his upside is tremendous.
The sophomore class is unproven, but Crabtree feels is very talented. Chris Malec is the Cardinals' most powerful player. Crabtree looks for Malec to make impact this spring as he transitions from junior college golf to the Division I level.
A transfer from Morehead State, Daniel Iceman competed in the fall and is looking to compete in the lineup again. He has a good work ethic and is working to become a better ball striker
Freshman Charlie Macneal was a late spring addition to team. He is a great young man with wonderful potential, and Crabtree looks for Macneal to get in the lineup and help this team right away. He owns a solid golf swing with nice touch around the greens.
Freshman Andrew Goodman played one event in the fall and is very capable pf helping the Cardinals this spring. He will need to gain valuable experience this year as he adjusts to collegiate golf.
As Crabtree enters his 12th season with the Cardinals, he looks for the upperclassmen to provide leadership and performance throughout this spring. He feels they are all capable and will need to raise their games if the Cardinals are going to win another BIG EAST title and return to regional action.
