LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville head women's lacrosse coach Kellie Young has announced the 2010 fall schedule, which is highlighted by four tournaments, one of which will take place at home in October, and three contests NCAA Tournament participants.
The Cardinals open the season on Sept. 24 in Harrisonburg, Va., at the James Madison Tournament. Louisville will square off against tournament-host JMU, which finished the 2010 spring ranked seventh in the final Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Association (IWLCA) poll and eighth in the InsideLacrosse poll. The noon contest pits Young and assistant coach Matt Lawicki against their former squad, James Madison, which reached the quarterfinals of the 2010 NCAA Tournament. To follow, Louisville plays Maryland-Baltimore County, which is coached by a former student-athlete of Young's in All-American Kelly Berger. The two squads are slated to begin play at 1 p.m.
A week later, the Cardinals head north to face NCAA Tournament participant Boston University on Oct. 2 at 1 p.m. Ranked 19th in the final IWLCA poll, the Terriers were the previous home of assistant coach Anne Sheridan, who was the program's first All-American goalkeeper. Sheridan continued her career there, serving as the top assistant coach for three seasons (five years of experience) at BU.
On Oct. 3, the Cardinals will begin play in the prominent Melting Pot Tournament at Harvard University. All contests will be held at Harvard Stadium. Louisville opens its three-game tournament against tournament-host Harvard at 9 a.m. Following an hour break, the team will face Albany at 11 a.m. and then close the day with a match against Brown at 1 p.m.
After a nearly two-week break, the Cardinals will play host to the Lax for the Cure Tournament on Oct. 14. The competitive field is comprised of tournament-host Louisville, Ohio State and Vanderbilt, with each team playing two contests. After a 3 p.m. match between Louisville and Ohio State, the Cardinals will turn their attention to Vanderbilt at 5:30 p.m. The Commodores, who reached the NCAA Tournament last season, finished the year ranked in the Top 10 in both major polls - ninth in InsideLacrosse and 10th in the IWLCA.
In order to help raise money during Breast Cancer Awareness month, Louisville will be selling pink T-shirts, with all proceeds going to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
Louisville returns to action at home on Oct. 16 for the Battle of the Sexes event against Bellarmine - another event that will be used to help raise money during Breast Cancer Awareness month. Admission will be free of charge, with a donation box at the gate. Half of the donations will be directed toward the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, aiding research, and the other half of the contributions will go to the Jack McGetrick Fund, Bellarmine's head coach, who is battling cancer.
The Cardinals finish the fall schedule with the George Mason Tournament in Fairfax, Va., on Oct. 23. Louisville will play George Mason at 9 a.m. and then George Washington at 11 a.m. The squad's toughest test of the weekend comes at noon with a contest against Penn State, which finished the year ranked 17th in both major polls. The final game of the tournament and the fall season will be played at 2 p.m. against Duquesne.
