LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The 11th ranked University of Louisville field hockey team defeated California 2-0 Sunday afternoon at Trager Stadium. The Cardinals improve to 4-2 while the Golden Bears drop to 2-4 on the season.
"This was a great team performance by the Cards," said U of L head coach Pam Bustin. "It was an important win in our region against a talented team. It was also a great way to cap off our week. We will rest up, regroup and get back to work for our conference opener."
The teams played mostly a midfield game through the first nine minutes before California drew two penalty corners and fired off three shots in a two minute span. Louisville sophomore goalkeeper picked up two saves to hold the Bears at bay.
The Cards worked the ball down the field and earned three quick penalty corners. The first two ended with saves by California goalkeeper, Maddie Hand, but the third time proved successful as Karah Nall found an open Tuli Lim who slid the ball past the Hand to put U of L on the scoreboard at the 22:33 mark.
Louisville struck again eight minutes later when Nicole Youman took control and dribbled the ball up the field and into the middle of the circle. The team captain sent a shot toward the cage where Erin Schneidtmiller was posted up on the right side and connected to give the Cards a 2-0 lead at the 30:38 mark.
The teams entered the break with Louisville owning a 9-4 advantage in shots and a 5-2 edge in corners.
Louisville had more opportunities to score in the second half, outshooting the Bears 8-2 and holding an 8-3 advantage in corners. California's Haleh Nourani entered the game at the start of the second half and posted four saves to keep the Cards from building the lead.
Conrad (4-2) had two saves en route to her second shutout of the season. California's Hand (2-4) had five stops while taking the loss.
The Cardinals (4-2) are back in action on Sept. 17 when Georgetown visits Trager Stadium for both teams' BIG EAST Conference opener.
