LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - Sophomore Haley Jurich scored three goals and senior Nicole Youman added a pair of goals to help the University of Louisville field hockey team to an 8-1 win over the alums in practice Saturday at Trager Stadium
"Despite the score, this was a very competitive game," said U of L head coach Pam Bustin. "I'm proud of our alums and I'm equally proud of our current team which found a way to finish against All-American goalkeeper Heather Bustanoby. As always, we will use this scrimmage to help us prepare for a challenging schedule."
Over 40 former players returned for the annual event and provided steady midfield play and defensive effort throughout the game, but the current Cardinals put on an offensive display, scoring four goals in each 20 minute half.
After the team drew five early penalty corners in the opening minutes of the game, Youman put the Cards in the board with an assist from senior Nikki Auker with 12:32 left in the first period. Youman added another goal six minutes later to increase the lead to 2-0. Simone Attles quickly made it a 3-0 game with an unassisted score at the 5:18 mark. Jurich netted the first of her hat trick just three minutes later.
Linda Neumacher's unassisted goal put the alumnae on the board with just under two minutes remaining in the first half to make the score 4-1.
Youman again got the scoring started with a goal off of a feed from senior Rachel Hollenbach in the first two minutes of the second half. Three minutes later, junior Heather Stevens added a goal, increasing the lead to 6-1. Jurich struck again at the 6:33 mark, this time with an assist from freshman Michelle Amon. Jurich completed the scoring with 1:10 remaining in the game for the 8-1 final.
Following the game, the teams played a mixed squad scrimmage for a 15 minute period in which Attles was responsible for the only goal.
The Cardinals will continue their preseason preparation when they play host to Kent State in a scrimmage on Saturday, August 21 at 1 p.m. at Trager Stadium.
