Louisville, Ky. - The University of Louisville football team put practice No. 8 in the books on Monday with a 24-period practice outdoors at the Howard Schellenberger Football Complex.
As has been common throughout the spring, the Cardinals practiced at a fast pace and hit a lot of hitting. Louisville closed the last six periods with a simulated scrimmage. The offense made a number of big plays in the passing game.
Red-shirt freshman Jeremy Wright continues to be the talk of the spring. He took an option pitch and raced almost 70 yards for a touchdown. He went down at the end of practice, but was just hit in the knee by a helmet.
Head coach Charlie Strong complimented senior running Bilal Powell for how hard he has run this spring. He graded out high in the scrimmage and was one of four offensive players who were considered champions in the scrimmage - Powell, Mario Benavides, Pete Nochta and Doug Beaumont were all recognized by the coaching staff.
The emergence of redshirt freshman Jeremy Wright at running back has also led to potential change in personnel. Sophomore Darius Ashley was movewd to cornerback in today's practice. Eugene Sowell, who has also played running back this spring, was moved over to linebacker, where he started his career.
"We have a stable of great running backs already, we're trying to get talent some other places," Ashley said after practice on Monday. "I never played corner before so I'm just trying to pick up on it now."
Ashley finished second on the team last year with 462 yards rushing, including a career-high 164 yards against West Virginia.
The Cardinals will hit the practice field again Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
