
Cardinals Start Penn Relays Strong

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The nationally ranked University of Louisville men's and women's track and field teams finished strong on day one of the prestigious Penn Relays in Philadelphia on Thursday.
The Cards only competed in five events on day one at the meet, which is highly regarded as one of the top in the NCAA outdoor track and field season.
Leading the way for the Cardinals were the women's jumping squad.
Senior Chiamaka Omenyinma finished third in the women's long jump. The school-record holder in the indoor long jump and Louisville native leaped 19-10.75 (6.06m) on her third attempt from the field. Sophomore Charachesicia Lockhart finished 14th with a jump of 18-06.50 (5.65m) respectively.
In the women's high jump, sophomore Megan Schubert finished third clearing 5-07.75 (1.72m). The mark was a personal best for the sophomore from Kokomo, Ind. Freshman Michelle Theophille was not far behind finishing fifth clearing a height of 5-06.00 (1.68m).
In the lone event of the day for the men's team, junior Matt Bruce placed sixth in the men's 5,000-meter run with a season and personal best time of 14:06.18. That mark currently is the 30th best mark in the east region and 72nd best mark overall in the NCAA this season.
The second day of the three-day meet will kick off at 9:00 a.m. (ET) for the Cardinals as sophomore Jordan Frazier will compete in the men's 400-meter hurdles. Friday's events will conclude for the Cards at 6:55 p.m. with the College Men's Sprint Medley Championship of America.
On Saturday, the throwing group will travel to Bowling Green, Ky. to compete at the WKU Invitational hosted by Western Kentucky University. The middle-distance group will stay close to home and compete at the Bellarmine Classic hosted by Bellarmine University. The WKU Invitational will start at 8:00 a.m. (ET) Saturday with the men's hammer throw and will end with the women's javelin at 4:30 p.m. while the Bellarmine Classic will commence at 3:05 p.m. (ET) with the women's 1,500 meters and will close with the men's 800 meters at 5:15 p.m. tentatively.
