LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville track and field's Mattias Wolter finished in the top 12 in the 3,000m steeplechase late Wednesday evening at the NCAA Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field to secure a spot in the finals in Eugene, Ore.
Wolter crossed the finish line fourth in his section, clocking a time of 8:45.00 to earn an automatic bid to Friday's final at 8:40 p.m. ET. After Texas A&M's Henry Lelei, the heat winner, distanced himself from the pack, Wolter maintained pace with the pack that featured finishers Nos. 2-5. Overall, Wolter recorded the 10th-fastest time of the field's 12 qualifiers.
A Conquerall Mills, Nova Scotia, native, Wolter captured the NCAA Division I East Preliminary 3,000m steeplechase title two weeks ago in Greensboro, N.C. He finished the race with a personal best and winning time of 8:41.29 and won the BIG EAST title in the discipline this year. He is making his first career appearance at the meet.
The Cardinals also boast two other athletes at the NCAA Championships in throwers Sam Bombaugh and Amashi Kendall. Bombaugh will compete in the hammer throw on Thursday, and Kendall is slated to participate in Saturday's shot put.
