LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Two University of Louisville track and field school records fell on the first day of the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Preliminary Rounds on Thursday at Irwin Belk Track in Greensboro, N.C.
Margret Harris clocked a personal-best and legal 11.48 in the 100m. Not only did she place 15th in the first-round event, also advancing to Friday's quarterfinal, but she broke Saravia Richardson's 2009 record of 11.57. Previously, Harris' fastest legal time was clocked at 11.74.
Just as impressive, sophomore Calvin Arsenault raced to a program- and personal-best time of 51.74 in the 400m hurdles, earning a 19th-place finish to advance to Friday's quarterfinal race. The Kitchener, Ontario, native first broke the seven-year-old 400m hurdles school record earlier this year, clocking a then-collegiate best 51.90 at the Auburn Tiger Classic.
Should Arsenault and Harris each place in the top 12 in the quarterfinals of their respective events, both would advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships from June 5-8 in Eugene, Ore.
In the field events, Amashi Kendall registered a top-20 finish in the discus with a throw of 48.65m/159-7. Kendall, who also qualified in the shot put, returns to action on Saturday in the event.
Collectively, Louisville continues its stay at the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds on Friday, May 24. Patrice Gates opens the day for Louisville in the hammer throw.
