Louisville, Ky. - The University of Louisville football team took the practice field on Wednesday for the first time under head coach Charlie Strong at the practice fields at Papa John's Cardinals Stadium.
Approximately 1,000 fans visited practice on Wednesday, and the first-year head coach appreciated the turnout.
"It was good," Strong said. "I think we gave the fans something to see, and that is what they wanted to see. It's their football team also so we give them a chance to come out."
The Cardinals practiced in shorts and helmets as they welcomed two newcomers to the squad in defensive end Tyler Harrell, a transfer from the University of Iowa, and junior-college transfer Randy Salmon, who all enrolled in January.
"I thought the conditioning of the team was good, the attitude was good and a lot of guys worked hard," Louisville head coach Char;lie Strong said following Wednesday's practice. "I was really pleased with the effort we had as a team. Obviously, this is the first day, but I want ti see how much we improve each and every day we have an opportunity to practice."
The Cardinals went through a 28-period practice, including a number of special teams periods.
Louisville returns 15 starters for 2010, Greg Scruggs and Johnny Patrick, who started all 12 games for the Cardinals on defense. Offensivley, the Cardinals return most of their backfield in Victor Anderson, Bilal Powell and Darius Ashley. Louisville also brings back five starters on the offensive line.
Wednesday's practice was the first of 15 scheduled for the fall of 2010, which will wrap up with the annual Red-White Game on Friday, April 16, at 7:30 p.m. at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium.
