AUSTIN, Texas - The No. 19 University of Louisville rowing team will open the 2010 spring racing season at the Longhorn Invitational on Friday-Sunday at Lady Bird Lake. The event will conclude the Cardinals' spring break training tip in Austin.
Louisville, ranked 19th in the preseason USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association NCAA Division I Coaches Poll released on Wednesday, will have four crews racing in the varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four and novice eight boats at the three-day event, which will consist of several 2,000-meter dual-style races. The Cardinals will open the Longhorn Invitational on Friday at 4:48 p.m. CT against Iowa, while their second set of races will begin on Saturday at 9:20 a.m. CT against Kansas State.
The Cards will continue the event at 4:56 p.m. CT on Saturday against Oklahoma and will conclude the weekend on Sunday at 8:08 a.m. CT against the host Longhorns.
"We've had a great week of training and are looking forward to this weekend's racing," said Louisville head coach Laura Aubrey. "It was a great opportunity for us to get down here early and have the entire week to train on the course as well as being on a great body of water. The Longhorn Invitational is packed with strong competition and makes for a great way to kick our 2010 season off. This weekend is about racing hard and making boats go fast. They need to put everything they've learned and everything they've gained over the last seven months and turn that into boat speed on the course."
The lineup for the Cardinals' varsity eight boat will be coxswain Ashley Edwardson, Anastasia Prokopenko (stroke), Sam Kayser, Sarah Fiske, Kristin Falovo, Kelly Traynor, Erin Bennett, Katie Rorer and Samantha Seldon, while the second varsity eight lineup will be coxswain Ellen Fawcett (coxswain), Lauren Mensch (stroke), Katie Scordo, Lina Azarova, Chelsea Haack, Kira Lawson, Cara Littleton, Lauren Proctor-Brown and Kayla Kroninger.
Louisville's varsity four lineup will feature coxswain Tara McKiernan (coxswain), Chelsea Coorts (stroke), Kylie Wrenn, Allison Siu and Ruthie Fligor, while the novice eight boat will have Chloe Lozano (coxswain), Kathleen O'Connell (stroke), Jamie Collins, Rebecca Smith, Mallorie Campbell, Katy Congleton, Allison Dukes, Isabelle Gottschalk and Angela Gregorio.
Following the Longhorn Invitational, the Louisville rowing team will compete against Alabama and Dartmouth on March 27 in Knoxville, Tenn.
