Louisville senior and reigning BIG EAST Player of the Year Melissa Roth earns the first BIG EAST Softball Player of the Week award of 2010 after hitting .647 over six games.
Roth, a Second Team all-America selection in 2009, led the Cardinals to a 5-1 record over the weekend going 11-for-17 at the plate. The senior tallied six runs, seven RBI and four stolen bases. Her two doubles and two triples helped her to a 1.000 slugging percentage while she walked five times to push her on-base percentage to .708. She had at least one hit in each game and had multi-hit performances in four-of-six games. Louisville picked up wins over Charleston Southern, Youngstown State, Akron, College of Charleston and a nonconference victory over St. John's. Roth is now tied for second on the school's career list for runs with 158. She currently leads the team with a .594 batting average, 13 runs and 10 RBI.
The Cardinals (9-2) will open the home season Feb. 26-28 for Cardinal Classic. Louisville will face Saint Louis at noon and Purdue at 2 p.m. Friday at Ulmer Stadium.
