LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville head coach Kellie Young has released the 2011 women's lacrosse schedule on Thursday, which is highlighted by 10 home games at the U of L Lacrosse Stadium.
The Cardinals will face nine opponents who had winning records. Additionally, five schools advanced to the NCAA Tournament, including Syracuse, which reached the NCAA Final Four.
The Cardinals open the year with three-straight home contests against teams they defeated last season in Binghamton (Feb. 20), Old Dominion (Feb. 26) and Oregon (March 4). In the win over the Monarchs, goalie Danielle Pawliw set a school record with 16 saves en route to the 12-8 victory.
Louisville then hits the road for a three-game stretch, heading south to Jacksonville, Fla., to face Jacksonville on March 12. After a five-day break, the squad heads north to Fairfield, Conn., on March 17 for tough matchup in Sacred Heart. The Pioneers, who finished the season with a 14-5 overall mark, going 9-0 in the Northeast Conference, won the league tournament title. The Cardinals wrap up the swing at Manhattan on March 19. Last season, the Cardinals defeated all three squads, winning by a combined total of 57-20. Additionally, Bergan Foley, the two-time national leader in goals per game, tallied a season-high seven goals against Jacksonville and Sacred Heart.
Returning home on March 24, Louisville will square off with 2010 NCAA Tournament participant Stanford, which finished last season 15-6 overall, 5-1 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. Three days later, Louisville opens BIG EAST play with a home contest against Cincinnati. The Cardinals conclude the four-game home stand with a pair of nonconference foes in Vanderbilt (March 30) and Ohio State (April 3).
Following a quick road trip to BIG EAST foes Loyola (Md.) on April 8 and Georgetown - winners of the BIG EAST Tournament title - on April 10, the Cardinals head back to Louisville for home games with Rutgers (April 15) and Villanova (April 17).
Louisville's final regular-season road trip consists of Syracuse (April 21), which finished the season with a 15-7 overall mark and reached the NCAA Final Four, and Connecticut - a team the Cardinals defeated 15-8 last season - on April 23.
The Cardinals will close the regular season at home with NCAA participant Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish had a record last season of 11-7 overall, 6-2 in the BIG EAST.
The 2011 BIG EAST Women's Lacrosse Championship will be held on the campus of Georgetown University, with the semifinals on May 5 and the title match on May 7. The NCAA Championships will begin on May 14 at campus sites, and the semifinal and final matches are set to take place at Stony Brook University in Stony Brook, N.Y., on May 27 and 29.
