
Volleyball Sweeps Lipscomb

Sophomore Lola Arslanbekova had a match-high 14 kills to lead the University of Louisville volleyball team to a 25-23, 25-21, 25-23 sweep of Lipscomb University Wednesday night in Cardinal Arena.
The Cardinals won their sixth straight match to move their record to 12-5. U of L outblocked the Bison 9-5 led by Amanda Simmons and Gwen Rucker who each notched four. Anastasia Artemeva added 12 kills and two aces for U of L. Libero Caitlin Welch had a match-high 14 digs. Lipscomb was led by Meghan Hinemeyer's 11 kills.
"This will be the start of an excellent home and away series for years to come," said U of L head coach Leonid Yelin. "They are the Atlantic Sun powerhouse and have a strong RPI as well as a strong Louisville connection on their roster."
U of L was a bit sluggish out of the gate and did not take the lead until Anastasia Artemeva smacked a service ace to take the Cardinals to set point at 24-23. Lola Arslanbekova came off the bench and blocked for game point. Neither team put on a stellar hitting performance, with U of L edging Lipscomb .189 to .111. Gwen Rucker led the Cardinals with five kills and a block.
Behind the strong serving of Maci Wachtel, the Cardinals ran out to a 6-1 lead. The Bison dug in and managed to come within on at 17-16 on a kill by Jake Pease. But the Cardinals got three blocks from Gwen Rucker and four kills from Anastasia Artemeva to cruise to the 25-21 win. The second set saw the Cardinals' hitting ramp up considerably with a .483 mark. Lola had eight kills on 11 swings and no errors to lead the Cards.
U of L took an early lead in the third set powered by three kills by Gwen Rucker going up 10-6. The Bison battled back with a 7-1 run to go up three at 16-13. U of L tied at 16 and then took the lead for good at 19-18.
