BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The University of Louisville rowing team opened the 2009 fall racing season on Saturday at the Lemonhead Regatta on Lake Lemon.
The Cardinals finished first and second in the Collegiate 4+ races with times of 19 minutes, 35 seconds and 20:02. The host Indiana Hoosiers were third (20:32) and fourth (20:44), followed by Louisville's third crew in fifth at 21:08. IU's third crew was sixth overall at 21:40, while the Cards' final crew was seventh at 21:45. The Cardinals also had several pairs racing in the season-opening event.
"The Lemonhead Regatta was a great day to officially get the season started," said third-year Louisville head coach Laura Aubrey. "Traveling with only the varsity squad, it was an opportunity for the team to see where we're at early on in the season and use that as a platform from which to build upon. The day was beautiful and race conditions were perfect on Lake Lemon.
"Racing in only fours and pairs, we were able to see the depth between each boat and how we compared in speed from the `A' boat to the `D' boat. It was great to see our top two boats place first and second in their event. Moving forward, we will need to tighten the speed between the two fours to fully capitalize our speed when we bring the two fours together to make the varsity eight. The same holds true for the `C' four and the `D' four. I'm very optimistic with this group and feel they are capable of achieving great things. They have great focus and their goals are clearly driving them everyday. We have quite a while before we race again and I know we will see a large jump in speed between now and then."
Up next, the Louisville rowing team is scheduled to compete at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston.
