Louisville, Ky.- - The practice counter reached double digits as the University of Louisville football team practiced for the 10th and 11th time this season.
The Cardinals conducted a special teams scrimmage Saturday morning in Papa John's Cardinal Stadium. The Cardinals went through each phase of sepcials teams.
Head coach Steve Kragthorpe started off with the all important field goal battle. Chris Philpott and Tim Dougherty received the reps during this first and all important phase. Philpott missed one of his attempts, while Dougherty was perfect on his attempts.
Against the scout team, Trent Guy took a kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown. Guy and Doug Beaumont were the first team, while Darius Ashley and Jacques Caldwell were the second team combination.
Punter Corey Goettsche continues to kick the ball extremely well. He has been more consistent this summer and has improved his hang time.
The offense looked sharp the last two days. The passing game has looked crisp as the quarterbacks get more comfortable with the offense and the coaching staff puts more in. Assistant coach Greg Nord said the offense has gotten better in the last two practices.
Stephon Ball made a couple of nice catches down the field in practice, while Cameron Graham continues to get better. Running back Victor Anderson has shown impressive break-away speed once he gets into the secondary.
On the defensive side, Brandon Heath is a name to remember. He has gotten to the quarterback and has made a lot of plays, while freshman Horace Miller has also cracked the two-deep. I can see why he set a state record for sacks. Due to some injuries (none very serious) on the line, freshmen Roy Philon and Malcolm Mitchell have earned reps.
"With 11 practices completed, I've seen some encouraging things and some things we still need to improve upon," said Kragthorpe. "Players are starting to seperate themselves in some of the position battles and I like the way the young players have come in and added to the competition."
The Cardinals will practice again late Saturday night before taking off Sunday. Kragthorpe will take the team to Fort Knox for the day. The team will work some of the obstacle courses and spend some time signing autographs for the people of Fort Knox.
