LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Under sunny skies, the University of Louisville football team continued preparations for its September 5 home opener against Indiana State with its first double session of the 2009 season.
The Cardinals conducted a 22-period full pad practice in the morning from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and came back this evening at 6:40 p.m. with an 18-period practice in shorts and shoulder pads.
Junior Justin Burke got the snaps with the first team as coach Steve Kragthorpe continues to rotate him and Adam Froman at No. 1. Burke took the snaps in the morning before Froman received his turn this evening. Both players have done some positive things and continue to make this a difficult decision for the head coach.
Wide receiver Scott Long did not wear pads or participate in any contact work in the morning, but did go full-speed this evening. Kragthorpe is bringing Long along around slowly after his ACL injury a year ago.
With long out of the lineup, the bulk of the reps went to Doug Beaumont, Trent Guy, Andrew Robinson, Troy Pascley and Andrell Smith.
Former Southern Mississippi head coach Jeff Bower was in attendance for both practices. He and U of L tight ends coach Jay Johnson worked together at USM.
Red-shirt freshman Darius Ashley made the coach of practice with a diving one-handed catch in team drills, while linebacker Brandon Heath went over the shoulder of a receiver to knock a ball away.
The Cardinals will attend the annual Kickoff Luncheon in the morning before conducting their first scrimmage on Thursday.
