LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville rower Sam Kayser has been selected to compete for Team Ontario at the 2009 Canada Summer Games on Aug. 17-22 in the Province of Prince Edward Island, Canada.
Kayser, a native of Ottawa, Ont., completed her sophomore season for the Cardinals in Louisville's varsity eight boat at the NCAA South/Central Regional in May.
"This is a great accomplishment for Sam to make the team and this will be a great experience for her," said Cards' head coach Laura Fogt. "She has been pursuing this goal since February, so I am thrilled to see her hard work and dedication pay off."
Over the past two years, more than 55 rowers were considered for the team, while 17 participated in the final selection camp. A final group of nine rowers were then chosen from that camp. Selection was done with a preliminary time trial as the rowers competed in a boat of their choice in a 2,000-meter race. Kayser and Boston University rower Mariel Boomgaardt finished with the highest gold medal standard percentage in the women's boats, while the three lowest percentages were then cut from the time trials. That was then followed by three days of pair-seat racing at 1,250 meters in order to select the Team Ontario rowers.
Rowers will train individually and in small groups with U23 crews in St Catherines, Ottawa, Kingston, and Orillia before training together as a full squad for a week prior to the Canada Summer Games.
