VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - - University of Louisville goalkeeper senior Heather Bustanoby is competing on the Midwest High Performance Team in the USA Field Hockey Women's National Championship June 20-27. Bustanoby joins former Team Cardinal alumnae Jessica Javelet and April White on the Midwest team. Senior forward Kayla May is an alternate on the squad.
Bustanoby turned in a strong performance Wednesday when she got the start and the win in the Midwest's 2-1 decision over Pennsylvania/California.
"I'm so proud of how Heather has competed this week," said U of L head coach Pam Bustin. "When you are playing behind USA Olympic goalkeeper Amy Tran, you have to be ready to play when called upon. She was absolutely prepared to play. It was an exciting night for Heather and she had some fantastic saves."
The USA Field Hockey Women's National Championship is a round-robin tournament featuring the top athletes from USA Field Hockey's six regional High Performance Centers which represent the New England, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Midwest, South and California regions. Once selected to a High Performance Center, athletes receive elite-level training from some of the nation's top coaches over the course of the spring.
At the conclusion of the program, each High Performance Center selects a team to represent its region at the National Championships. Athletes competing in the tournament have the opportunity for selection to the U.S. National Squad.
