Louisville, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's golf team was selected to the NCAA Men's Golf Regional Championships Monday evening as the BIG EAST's Conference automatic qualifier. The Cardinals won the BIG EAST Championship in impressive fashion on April 21 at the Lake Jovita Country Club.
The Cardinals earned a No. 8 seed, and will be one of 14 teams competing at The Club at Olde Stone in Bowling Green, Kentucky, May 14-16.
The NCAA Division I Men's Golf Regional is a preliminary round of the NCAA Division I Men's Championship. The Regional will consist of a 54-hole tournament with 14 teams and five individual players competing at Bowling Green. The low five teams and low individual not on those teams will advance to the NCAA Championships, which will be held at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.
The Louisville men's golf program will be making its fifth straight trip to the NCAA Regionals, all under the direction of coach Mark Crabtree. The Cardinals were coming off their best performance in the tournament last season. After finishing in a tie for fourth at the NCAA Central Regional last season, the Cardinals went on to post a 10th-place national finish at the NCAA Championships at the University of Purdue.
"Bowling Green is a great location," said Crabtree. "I'm very excited for our team and to go right down the road for us is great for our players. It's a great golf course. We played there earlier this year against Tennessee in a dual match so our players are familiar with the course layout. It's going to be a good test of golf."
Louisville appeared in the 2004 EAST Regional and finished 15th overall. In 2005, the Cardinals placed 22nd overall. The Cardinals had their highest regional finish in 2007 when they placed third at the NCAA Regional and advanced to their first NCAA Championship, placing 27th.
Senior Adam Hadwin, who won the BIG EAST individual title this year, is making his fourth straight regional appearance. He placed 55th at the NCAA Championships a year ago, while Karsten Clements was tied for 64th place. The Cardinals will likely participate with three freshmen in Connor Arendell, Justin Dorward and Riley Wheeldon, the BIG EAST's Rookie of the Year.
The Cardinals are currently ranked No. 43rd in the latest Golfweek performance index.
