Bowling Green, Ky. - After multiple weather delays, the University of Louisville's men's golf season came to a disappointing end at the NCAA Central Regionals at the Club at the par 72, 7,372-yard Olde Stone in Bowling Green, Ky.
The top five teams advanced to the NCAA Championships in Toledo, Ohio on May 27-30. The Cardinals will not advance for the first since the 2006 season. Louisville had been to the last two NCAA Championships, including a school-best 10th-place finish a year ago.
As a team, the Cardinals finishied in a tie for sixth place, firing 296-293-296=885 . The Cardinals were 8-over par for the day and 21-over par for the entire tournament, tying with NC State and Ole Miss. The Cardinals were four shots back of fifth-place Duke.
UCLA won the regional by overcoming a large deficit to outlast Washington. The Bruins were 2-under par on the day to win by seven strokes. Ohio State, Georgia Tech and Duke also advanced.
"It was a tough round for us today," said head coach Mark Crabtree, who's team shot an 8-over par on the day. "For the group, I think the inexperience hurt us. It's something we need to build upon for next year. I hope we can take this experience and work towards getting to the next level. Overall, it was a good season. We return everybody except Adam so I think we can be a good team."
Senior Adam Hadwin's career came to an impressive close, carding 74-71-71=216, which was at even par for the tournament. Hadwin finished in a tie for seventh-place. He looked to have a shot at advancing as an individual when he birdied No. 14 to go to 3-under par for the day. However, a double bogey on 16 and a pair of pars on holes 17 and 18 ended his tournament hopes.
Freshman Connor Arendell, who was making his first post-season appearance played pretty well, shooting 73-74-76=223 to tie for 27th-place overall. He shot 7-over par for the tournament.
Freshman Riley Wheeldon, the BIG EAST's Newcomer of the Year, was pretty solid all week on one of the toughest courses in the country. He carded a 74-74-76=224 for the three days, which was 8-over par. He was tied for 30th.
Sophomore Karsten Clements, who rebounded from a 7-over par first round, was just 3-over par over the next two rounds to finish 79-74-73=226. He finished 39th.
Freshman Justin Dorward, playing in his first regional, was up and down all week. He fired a 14-over par 75-79-76=230 during the three rounds. He finished in 48th-place overall.
The weekend was full of stops and starts, experiencing a number of delays due to weather. Play was delayed for the fifth time during the three days at 12:51 p.m. (CST) on Saturday with two of the Cardinals through nine holes. After a 34-minute lightning delay, the Cardinals returned to the course, but could never fully recover.
The Cardinals finally finished the second round about 11:00 a.m. (CST) on Saturday morning. The round was scheduled to start at 7:30 a.m. (CST) with a shot gun start, but play was once again delayed until 9:12 a.m. (CST) due to lightning in the area.
The Cardinals, who had about five holes to play on Saturday morning, finished the second round at 13-over par and in a three-way tie for fourth place with Ohio State and NC State.
