For the first time, the University of Louisville lacrosse team received votes in the IWLCA/Under Armour weekly poll. The Cardinals are headed to the BIG EAST as the No. 4 seed this weekend in Washington, DC.
Northwestern University captured all 20 first-place votes for the seventh consecutive week en route to an 11th straight week atop the IWLCA/Under Armour weekly poll. The 'Cats have now been ranked in first by all 20 voters nine times in 2009. Old Dominion joined the poll for the first time this season as there was some shuffling in the poll after the first five spots held steady from last week.
Sixteen of the 20 teams come from four conferences-the American Lacrosse Conference, the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Big East and the Ivy League-with each conference claiming four ranked schools. All four of the ACC schools are ranked in the top-10 as Maryland sits at No. 2 and UNC and Duke follow at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively, while Virginia remains in the top-10 at No. 9. Two of the Big East institutions are in the top-10, with No. 7 Georgetown just edging No. 8 Syracuse; Notre Dame moved to No. 11 while Loyola dropped to No. 17. The ALC is led by top-ranked Northwestern; Vanderbilt joins the 'Cats in the top-10 at No. 10. Ohio State held at No. 13, while Penn State rose to No. 15. Penn, at No. 3, leads four Ivy schools, including No. 6 Princeton as well as Dartmouth (No. 16), and Cornell, which moved to No. 20.
The America East is the only other conference with multiple schools in the rankings. Boston University fell to No. 12 while New Hampshire held at No. 19. Stanford of the MPSF stays ranked and moved up to No. 14 while Old Dominion from the CAA entered the rankings at No. 18. On Tuesday, the No. 10 Commodores travel to face No. 20 Cornell. Wednesday features two regional matchups as top-ranked Northwestern hosts ALC rival No. 13 Ohio State and No. 12 Boston University welcomes No. 16 Dartmouth. The ACC Tournament starts on Thursday at Virginia Tech, while on Friday the Big East tournament kicks off at Georgetown; the first semifinal features No. 8 Syracuse against No. 11 Notre Dame.
