Lake Jovita, Fla. - The University of Louisville men's golf team won its second-ever BIG EAST Championship in four years with an impressive five stroke win over Marquette at the Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club.
Senior Adam Hadwin won the BIG EAST individual title by tearing up the final round. He shot a five-under 67 on Tuesday to become the third Cardinal player to ever win a BIG EAST title. Daryl Fathauer won medalist honors in 2007 when he shot a seven-under par and Derek Fathauer carded a 14-under par title in 2006.
The Cardinals entered the final round with an 11 stroke lead over Marquette, who finished in second place. The Golden Eagles made up six shots on Tuesday, but the Cardinals cruised to the tournament win.
"This is a great win," said head coach Mark Crabtree. "I'm so proud that our seniors first win was as a BIG EAST champion. This was a total team effort. Karsten Clements really stepped up for us today."
Hadwin entered the final round tied for the overall lead with Mike Van Sickle of Marquette. However, Hadwin, who shot 207 for the tournament, defeated the Marquette star by three strokes. Hadwin, whose previous best was a top three finish, picked up his first-ever tournament win.
Sophomore Karsten Clements tied Van Sickle for second overall by shooting a four-under par 68 to jump to the second spot. Clements shot 71-71-68=210 for the three rounds. Freshman Riley Wheeldon was also in the top 10 by tying for seventh overall. Entering the final round at 1-under par, Wheeldon shot 2-under par 70 to jump into a tie for seventh place.
Freshman Justin Dorward tied for 17th overall with 71-75-74=220 and freshman Connor Arendell was tied for 19th at 75-72-74=221.
With the win, the Cardinals received the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals, which will begin on May 14-16. The pairings will be announced on Monday, May 4.
